, with the exception of libya which is a special case which the obama administration is clearly on defense. what came across is there is a huge difference in style and attitude how these two campaigns will approach things. when they got to the policies, the two sides are remarkably similar. the romney campaign has throughout this campaign been trying hard to make this big contrast on foreign policy while actually keeping their policies fairly close on afghanistan, syria, on iran, to where the administration is. both sides want a withdrawal in 2014. the difference here is that the romney campaign won't call it a deadline for withdrawal, but they want to withdraw in 2014. both sides support the same set of sanctions for iran. the difference is that the romney campaign may have done something different earlier and may have gone less through the u.n. and may have been more vocal about their criticism of u.n. both have the same policy on syria. the difference is the romney campaign wouldn't have gone through the u.s., wouldn't have been more vocal and supported syrian opposition earlier. on the actual pol

, the bush administration and obama administration, we always knew that u.s. consulates and embassies are absolutely prime targets for terrorist attacks. we've seen this before in the bush administration, we had attacks in the consulate in karachi and pakistan in saudi arabia, in jeddah, in syria, and elsewhere throughout the region. so this is not entirely new. we know the threat is there. i think what we've seen in libya is, obviously a government which still had a real challenge in using its own forces to protect the limited u.s. presence and very legitimate questions now about the degree of security that was there at the embassy. from what i understand, there still was no long specific actual intelligence about this attack, but it's quite clear there was a threat in libya generally, a specific threat that we'd seen over the previous couple months in benghazi, and now obviously the congress and the executive branch have to look hard and see should that security have been heightened, but as you noted, the diplomatic security within the state department has long been a target of budg

what president obama didn't do, which is to defend the obama administration's policies from the past four years. i also think you're going to vice president biden go after ryan and romney for having really become a little more moderate in recent days. we're getting a preview of that and the xr and t and the campaign trail. we heard president obama preview that a little bit in his comments when he said that mitt romney has been running for the past year as someone who is extremely conservative and now he's trying to convince you, and i quote, that was extremely kidding. of course, his challenge is really tonight not to make one of those gaffes he has been called out for in the past and, of course, he's facing off against someone who is regarded as a formidable challenger. paul ryan is somebody who is steeped in the details. someone who is no stranger to having to debate things like budget proposals and that sort of thing. so i think people are prepared for this to be a pretty close debate. the latest pew poll had 40% of people saying that they expected paul ryan to win, 34% expecting
